When Brahms’ album was found in April, 2011, it was sold for a whopping $158, 500. It was discovered by the auction house Doyle in Arnold Wehner’s old home. Wehner was the musical director at Gottingen during the 1850’s and worked with various different musicians.

The album contained many contributions and quotations from musicians and composers such as Liszt, Schumann, Mendelssohn and Brahms himself. This is a wonderful discovery for any classical music lover and broadens our appreciation for such talented men. Wehner and his friend Edouard Remenyi were both visiting Gottingen in June of that year and it is believed that Wehner received the production during the visit. This new finding is clearly written by Brahms himself and includes marking done during practices.

This new piece of music is complete and is not an unfinished sketch. In addition, he uses the same theme used twelve years later in his Scherzo trio. This discovery was initially deemed incredible; however, it did not remain this way.

Problems arose when the true owner of this musical piece spoke out. It was initially believed to be found and catalogued for sale on the 20th of April, 2011 at Doyle New York’s sale. Dr. Michael Struck from Johannes Brahms Gesamtausgabe, Kiel helped Doyle in order to recognize and classify this new piece of music.

Unfortunately, BBC followed up by stating that Christopher Hogwood, a musicologist and conductor, had found the original manuscript a few months prior. Furthermore, Andras Schiff was chosen to perform the piece during a world premiere on the 21st of January, 2011. This new piece of information leads us to believe that Doyle did not possess the original manuscript.

If you desire to find out more about the long lost manuscript of Brahms’, simply do a quick search on Google for images and videos concerning “Album Amircorum of Arnold Wehner.” You can also watch Schiff’s rendition of Brahms’ musical piece, a video which will surely inspire you.
