How to Identify Notes By Ear
It is kind of unfortunate that some pianists tend not to learn how to identify
notes on the piano by ear. Some people
think that this lesson is pretty much advanced. But in reality, anyone can learn to identify notes by the ear,
as long as you have the sensitivity for pitch and rhythm.
But of course, you will have to learn how to read the music sheet to enhance your listening skills.
Tips in learning how to identify notes on the piano by ear
Memorize the white and black keys
The white keys cover almost the entire length of the keyboard. They also represent the natural
notes that symbolize the first 7 letters of the alphabet. The black keys, on the other hand, can be seen along the
top of the white keys.
They are mostly grouped in 2’s or 3’s and can be classified in to two groups, the sharps and flats.
A sharp is a key that is played half step higher than the white note while the flat is a half step lower than the
white note.
Practice
When learning how to identify music intervals on the
piano by ear, practice is the real key. Practicing allows you to retain valuable information through
repetition. Of course, you won’t be able to identify these notes without having to practice a lot.
You should also practice both of your fingers when playing the notes. Be sure to practice playing up and down on
the keyboard and not just on the middle.
Develop your sense of hearing
You can do this by constant practicing. You can play several notes on the piano and listen to the sound you
produce. Play the same note over and over again until you’ve gotten acquainted with the sound. You can also play
several notes at a time and memorize the sound when you teach yourself
piano.
Understand the notes in a music sheet
Being able to understand the notes in a music sheet can be of great help. If you can read the notes, you will
never find it hard to identify notes by the ear. If you cannot read the notes, you might as well get a
